India asks Pakistan to immediately return IAF pilot, ensure his safety
NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday summoned the acting high commissioner of Pakistan and demanded immediate and safe return of an IAF pilot who was detained by Pakistan following an aerial engagement by air forces of the two countries.
It has also been made clear to Pakistan that no harm should be caused to the Indian defence personnel, the external affairs ministry said, adding it has conveyed strong objection to the neighbouring country at the "vulgar display" of an injured personnel in violation of all norms of International Humanitarian Law and the Geneva Convention.
Pakistan detained Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman following a fierce engagement between air forces of the two sides along the Line of Control in which a Pakistani jet was downed. IAF also lost a MiG 21 jet in the engagement.
"It was made clear that Pakistan would be well advised to ensure that no harm comes to the Indian defence personnel in its custody. India also expects his immediate and safe return," the MEA said.
The Pakistani acting high commissioner was summoned this afternoon by the MEA to lodge a strong protest at the unprovoked act of aggression by Pakistan against India, including by violation of the Indian air space and targeting of Indian military posts.
The response by Pakistani air force came a day after IAF smashed a terrorist training camp of JeM terror camp in Balakot in Pakistan.
"This is in contrast to the India's non-military anti-terror pre-emptive strike at a JeM terrorist camp in Balakot on February 26. It is unfortunate that instead of fulfilling its international obligation and bilateral commitment to take credible action against terrorist entities and individuals operating from its soil, Pakistan has acted with aggression against India," the MEA said.
"It was clearly conveyed that India reserves the right to take firm and decisive action to protect its national security, sovereignty and territorial integrity against any act of aggression or cross-border terrorism," said the MEA.

The obsolete MiG 21 crash today is a result of the fact that no modern aircraft was purchased by India for the last 30 years. The government's of those years are responsible for the capture of our pilot by Pakistan.

A country comprises of few Brave men n a Lot of Cowards ... what turns worrisome is when the cowards start to break the morale of the brave.
We had two options, either remain meek and suffer pak proxy terrorism for years to come,
be strong and decisive. This Govt has called off the bluffs ... We smashed their terror bunkers a day back , PLUS around 20 i5lami5t5 have been sent to meet their h00ries since Pulwama ..
... and .... in a war, the opposition starts blaming the govt when one IAF pilot is captured.
Here, a 1960''s MIG took down a Fourth Gen F-16

In simple words, we all drop our head in shame and disbelief. We lost all our self respect. I don't blame modi alone. All our leaders are spineless and uneducated. Only Indira Gandhi was a true leader. She defeated pak, also splitted them.

Use of MIG 21 itself was a biggest mistake during such kind of operation.

Like its a bollywood action thriller. We tried today and they shot down two of our jets. we need to admit that they have stronger Air force. Our greedy politicians ruined our forces. For pst many years we are not upgrading our IAF and they are upgrading at much larger scale with chinese and russian help.

Who in the government allowed IAF to send MiG21 flying coffin in such a critical situation, when state-of-the-art aircraft should have been sent to fight Pak airforce. I can''t believe who made this decision and at what level. Can''t they understand war dynamics. Superior weapons with superior pilot skills always wins. A piece of junk can''t win you a war.

I am seeing thousands of comments since today morning. Did anyone notice, that when MEA spoke abt yday attack at Balakot, the spoke about all the aircrafts...12 Mirage, 5 Sukhois, Awacs..etc etc. On today's PAF attack at naushera, they r completely silent...not even talking abt any aircraft. Fact is our bravehearts had used only the sloppy Migs, as those wud hv been only available at that location. The previous Govts shud answer ... Today only becoz of those unscrupulous thugs, India is at a compromising ... Read More

Modi should have send rss and BJP members at the border. Only power hungry, he has put our nation’s pilot life on risk. 莫迪应该把民族志工组织和人民党的成员派到边境去。他只对权力饥渴难耐，他把我们国家的飞行员的生命置于危险之中。

Funny, Indian claims of shooting down Pakistan''s F-16, no request from Pakistan for the safe return of Pakistani pilot, But Indian claims yesterday, of none of their fighter jets having been hit, are now requesting the safe return of their pilot from Pakistan...Hilarious!!!!

In 1972 war India had returned 92,000 Pakistani solders safely, Now see what Pakistan do here.
Let's pray for safe return of Indian captain.

In any conflict there will be collateral damage. We are compromising on Wing Cmdr Vardhaman's by begging with Pak. Let the govt respond appropriately through more strikes. We are clear, our action is against terrorists theirs is against us. We need to see this through. Anyone missing Rafale!! Can someone ask Congress why we are forced to pitch MIG-16 against a much superior F-16??

Disappointed with the response of our airforce and more so this pilot. The only rule in a team game is that one can sacrifice themselves but not make their entire team vulnerable. By landing in an enemy territory and getting captured this pilot has weakened the position of the country and the people of India and Modi. All the gains got in the last few days have been squandered away. wonder if India is prepared at all to tackle pak?
